Author John Nygard III and illustrator Carol Ada join talents in this children’s book that appears to be the debut publication by John. The story is so well sculpted and the lessons about childhood fears so well managed that it seems he will have a very successful career should he pursue other books of this nature.

A wee chap named Jack does not like baths or showers but with his mother’s reassurance he agrees to shower, not minding the experience at all – until one night he hears a noise and sees a shadowy presence in his yard: Jack is sure it is Bigfoot! His mother listens and tells Jack that Bigfoot is imaginary. That night Jack prepares for his shower, but when he opens the door of the bathroom, steam escapes and he sees a shadow behind the shower curtain. Frightened he tells his mother about Bigfoot being in the shower and decides he didn’t want to shower again. He gathered his courage and decided to catch Bigfoot. He waits beside the bathroom door but all is quiet - until he hears the shower go on, sees a furry hand at the curtain, and decides to face Bigfoot – but instead of Bigfoot the ‘creature’ in the shower is his own Dad, dirty from work. Jack shares his sightings and fears and his Dad reassures him that the figure outside and the figure in the shower was simply his own dirty working self. It was Dad all the time! No need to fear.

The fine storyline and the excellent illustrations combine well to offer a children’s story that will doubtless be a favorite – for the fright, for the discovery, and for the funny aspects. This is a fine little book – especially for a debut story – and bodes well for John Nygard III. Grady Harp, August 16
