Facing the inevitability of a terminal diagnosis of one of their own, a group of friends accepts the Thirty-Seven: Four challenge to go after their heart's desires. Raquel wants to write a novel, and while she has the education, her past continually represses her dream. Laura wants to sing, but at fifty she fears she has waited too long. Jenna desires fame on the stage, or is it the adoration of men she truly seeks? Sydney is running out of time. She's spent her life serving others, but only wants to be the belle of the ball. Stephanie joins the group hoping to escape the loneliness of her life after being released from prison. As they travel their course, they find that some desires require sacrifice while others might not have been what they desired at all. In the process, God uncovers their hearts, leads them over obstacles, and reveals what they truly delight themselves in.

What a blessing of a book.

Life is messy. Yes, even for Christians. Thirty-Seven: Four doesn't gloss over such messiness; rather it highlights the struggles to work through it in a way that honors God. Death, adultery, fornication, parenting, dating, rejection, aspirations-it all is addressed in all its ugliness and beauty. It's refreshing to read a Christian novel set in present time that deals with real life situations. Likewise, I appreciate that it does not embrace the cliché-like qualities of a Hallmark movie. The characters are both likable, yet flawed, which makes them multidimensional and the story relatable and inspiring for my own Christian walk.

As the title suggests, this book tells about life through the deeper message of delighting ourselves in the Lord to obtain the desires of our heart. Thirty-Seven: Four illustrates what happens when we consider our heart's desire through the lens of God's will in contrast to our own and the consequences of both. It shows the true devastation of sinful choices, the beauty and grace of God, and the blessings that are revealed as a result of delighting oneself in the Lord.
I am delighted to say I finished the book feeling satisfied.
