I could hardly wait to review this book. I was able to beta-read this story and got a wonderful surprise. Ken Farmer has easily moved into an exciting style of writing different from his usual award-winning story-telling method. This story is written in the same flair of To Kill A Mockingbird.
The depth of mystery is intensified in this plot. The characters are more defined and emotional. What I see in the characters is true-life depictions of people – and places – that seem to exemplify the time period and how life actually happened back then. And it wasn’t that far back in time, as is this author’s other numerous books. Despite all the trauma and danger, there is always humor. Yet, it is not shallow or superficial filler. Farmer’s characters’ dialogues are on point and move the story along. If you read a story the way many people do, you can almost hear the characters breathing as they speak their lines; the strains as they go through their motions. Farmer has a way of creating people who are true to the times and eras in which they live. Farmer’s writing brings alive the truths of days long past, shows us how people lived back then and offers an example of how we’ve changed since those times.
That said, don’t let this description fool you. This is a tightly written, gripping mystery that could leave you begging for help for some of the characters till you finally get to the ending. This is a shocking mystery with both happiness and heartache, and many unexpected twists. It’s a fast read; all of Farmer’s books are written lean. This author has a way of creating scenes in scant few words that move the story, but you will miss nothing in the read.
