M. A. Phipps, author

Adult; Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror; (Market)

In a society where oppression and conformity rule the masses and the slightest unusual behavior could be seen as treasonous, Wynter Reeves would do just about anything to ensure she isn't noticed. However, when she begins to show symptoms of a rare and debilitating illness, she unwillingly attracts the attention of the Stateā€”in particular, the feared research facility known as the DSD. Through them she learns of the true nature of her condition, a disease known only as Ultraxenopia.

Alysia from Riley Amos Westbrook

I think this was a very good book. I would read more on this series! I found myself taken by the life and struggles of the main character, Wynter Reeves. Wynter takes a placement exam that will determine the rest of her life. I enjoyed following this character in this story. I can see this book as a movie one day!

Loved this book! It kept me interested and I flew right through it. The storyline isn't like anything I've read before and I recommend this to everyone! I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the one!

Donna Mulligan

For fans of sci fi, this is a promising debut. A well driven plot, with an reluctant heroine discovering her powers. Look forward to next instalment.

Gillian Gibson

A really good sci - fi concept which surprised me and kept me enthralled to the extent that I read the whole book in one sitting, a good story line with many twists and turns, looking forward to part 2

Jamie Marsden

I absolutely adored this book! Wynter Reeves is definitely a heroine to follow. Throughout the whole book I found myself having trouble to put it down! It definitely sucked me in! I'm so excited to continue on this adventure with M.A Phipps and her outstanding writing in the second book!!!! This book is definitely a MUST READ!!!!!!!

okay so this book is amazing and i wont tell you why because you need to read it for yourself. the ONLY reason this book got a 4.5 from me is because i felt like it lacked background. to some it might not be important back ground but i wanted to know more about the state and her parents. but other than that i am SOOOOOO pleased with this book and feel so honored i got a free copy! i loved it and shed a few tears (as most of you know im a huge cry baby) thanks again M.A. Phipps i am here for the next book! :)

If dystopian is your genre, then this is well worth the time spent reading. It is well written with only a few proof reading errors.

Julie Phipps

This is not my usual genre of book so I wondered if I would like it. The book grabbed me more or less from the beginning. The tension of wondering what would happen to Wynter and Phoenix was exciting. The storyline is unusual and I am looking forward to seeing if her visions come true and what happens to Ezra. can't wait for part 2.

This story pulls you in from the beginning and leaves you wanting to read the next book immediately!
We meet Wynter as she nervously heads to take a placement exam that will determine the rest of her life. She has an anxiety attack, leaves early, and then everything in her life is turned upside down. The evolution of this story draws you in and does not let go. I read it in two sittings! And that was only because I had to work.
If you enjoy dystopian novels and strong character development, you will definitely enjoy this book. The best part is that there is more to come! I cannot wait for the next book.

I wrote this review a day after I finished the book. And let me just say I kept catching myself thinking about this book all day and night! A good book can do that to you people!!! Now, I love me some dystopian books. And let me tell you I LOVED this exciting, breath holding, thrilling, interesting, suspenseful, unique dystopian! I'm not going to lie... I may or may not have yelled out loud at the characters thinking they could hear me. I got so caught up in this book that I often forgot it was a piece of fiction with fictional characters!
Meet the characters:
First, we have our heroine Wynter. She has just the right about of stubbornness, courage, and fire to make her... well amazing! I can totally see her turning into a kick butt girl by the end of this series! Next, meet Dr. Evil... I mean Dr. Richter. Let's just say he is not a nice guy. Now let's talk about the oh so handsome Ezra. He is fiercely loyal and a tad protective. Next, we have the ever charming Jenner. The ultimate best friend! And of course the kind hearted Rai. I adored how well written it was and the great character develop! I can totally see this series being a hit! So do yourself a favor and read this book!!! However, if you don't do good with cliffhangers, like myself, you might wanna wait until the second one is close to coming out! But for sure read it!!! I know I would LOVE to read the second book as soon as possible! Wink wink M.A. Phipps!

Kristina Manciocchi

This book was a fun read. It draws you in from the beginning and doesn't stop. It is very well written and I can see this quickly becoming a fan favorite like Hunger Games. Can't wait for book two!!

L. J. Burpoe

This book pulls you right in from the moment you start it. I found myself drawn right into the life and struggles of the main character, Wynter Reeves. The writer does an excellent job of depicting a futuristic society filled with hardship and cruelty. I also like the medical twist that goes along with this story. 'Ultraxenopia' ranks right up there with 'The Giver'. I can't wait for the next book to come out!

L. S. Lynn

If every first-person novel I read could be written by Phipps, I'd probably read a lot more. Instead of the droll commentary normally used, Wynter Reeves has an extremely unique voice--one I adored.

The story is interesting, the characters well-developed as we delve into their arcs. Phipps holds the cast to just a handful so the readers really begin to care for them, especially in the dark times ahead.

Unfortunately some of the characterization tropes were the over-used, predictable ones. The love "triangle" was mildly unnecessary for the plot, as were the too-soon declarations of love.

All in all it was a fantastic story, and I'm very much looking forward to the next in the series.

Lena Nieves

I really enjoyed this book, especially the characters! If you enjoy scifi books set in a distopian future this book is definitely for you! I cannot wait for the next books!

Maranda Ward

Ultraxenopia sucked me in. I literally couldn’t put it down! This book has all the elements of a great dystopia… oppression, rebellion, political upheaval, action, drama, good vs. evil, main characters pulled between two sides—need I say more?

The character development was strong and I believed in the relationships. Especially, Wynter’s reactions to both captivity by the State and the Phoenix community.

This book sets the stage for more. We become invested in the characters with hints of what’s to come.

I was so intrigued by the State. What bits and pieces we gain about the society sucks you in and makes you crave more. I’ll be keeping my eye out for the sequel for sure!

Matt Dinsmore

Not usually my type of genre of book. However once I started to read this book I found it difficult to put down. I would tell myself one more chapter but get to the end and carry on reading as I wanted to see what would happen. Throughout the book kept me indulged and intrigued with twists that you would not expect. A V good book. Highly recommended to not just the readers of this genre but to all who love to read.

Michael Quinn

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the sequel!! It introduces a new and unique society to the dystopian genre, and a new heroine for readers to follow (hopefully for several more books to come :^). The book is very well structured and extremely well written, especially given that it's this authors first published effort. It is a quick read with the storyline progressing nicely throughout, with no parts that don't contribute to the ongoing development of the characters and story. This first book in the series nicely establishes the major characters and the setting they will operate in, while also setting the stage for even greater action and excitement in the books to follow. If you liked the Hunger Games and Divergent this is definitely a must read!

Michelle Burpoe

To all the fans of The Hunger Games, Maze Runner and Divergent series: THIS is your next big read. A compelling plot, set in a dystopian future, with a heroine coming to grips with her power and discovering her place in the world. An instant classic, ranking up there with classics such as Orwells' Nineteen Eighty-Four and Burgess' A Clockwork Orange. Very much looking forward to the next two books!

Rebecca Collier

I really enjoyed reading this book - it normally takes me months to get into and read a book but I started this on Monday and finished last night!

I really love this book - it is easy to read, very fluid and detailed, and puts you right in the middle of the pages. You feel for Wynter and what she faces and you develop feelings, good or bad, for the other characters -- the detail in this book is superb and graphic so I always was always able to imagine the scene; the passion behind the characters is almost tangible.

The political environment of the book also makes for a thrilling experience - seeing the oppression and how it's affected the greater community and the struggle between the two political groups makes this science fiction novel a very fascinating read. I have felt every sort of emotion you could possibly feel in a book and I'm so excited for the second one!!!

I highly recommend this book to someone who needs a high paced and exciting read to spice up a boring commute.

Rebecca Gibson

I picked up this book not knowing what to expect but was thoroughly blown away! Ultraxenopia is a unique take on a dystopian future, full of suspense and turmoil. The tension starts building from the moment we first meet Wynter on the train to take her placement exam and keeps building until you're on the edge of your seat. Her life becomes full of adventure and fear, whilst her emotions make her a relatable character. I really got inside her head and felt like I walked through her journey with her. My heart was racing the entire time and, I'm not ashamed to admit it, a few tears were shed along the way. A very interesting concept which I can't wait to find out more about!! M.A. Phipps is certainly a debut author to watch out for :)

S. K. Gregory

Wynter Reeves lives in a future world where everyone must be the same, but Wynter's not the same as everyone else. She has a rare illness that makes her stand out. Dystopian novels are all the rage right now and this one is well written and has a great main character who is relatable. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to dystopian fans.

Shaun Erickson

A solid, quick read in the dystopian YA/NA genre. The story has some of the themes similar to other series' in the genre, but with a different twist in that it features a debilitating disease for the main protagonist.

The writing was in the first person, fast paced and suspenseful, everything I'd look for in this genre. Phipps does a great job of leaving chapters hanging, so you want to start the next one right away. The side effect is that you don't want to put the book down!

Overall, I enjoyed it. I'll be looking forward to the rest of the series as well. I'm not a huge series reader, so for me to want to read the next one, says something about the writing. I recommend it for anyone that enjoys the YA/NA dystopian genre...for something a bit different.

I did receive a copy of the ebook for an honest review.

Tammie Tackett

i would reread this book 5 times if i can it was good and awesome

Taylor Ramsay Barger

This book is AWESOME. I (like most of us) am a pretty big book snob and I was captivated through this whole book. I am a new mom and do not have a lot of time to read but I found myself reading in between diapers, bouncing, and bottles. The fact that the author made this more gritty rather than 'fluffy' sets it apart from all of the other books that are on the shelves today. The characters are interesting and the idea of the whole book is new even though it is following the whole dystopian book culture that is so posh today. This book has a little bit of "The Giver" and a little "Hunger Games" rolled into one, and that is a GOOD thing. This is just the first part of a trilogy and I cannot wait to see what happens to the lovely Wynter and the rest of the characters. Bravo!
