Under a Dark Sky
On the rebel planet Elysium, a man is executed on live video streamed by religious extremists. Nothing terribly original so far for Elysium. Only this time, the man doesn't die. When security expert Asher Perez is sent to find him, dark secrets about the rebel colony are exposed. Something is stirring in the shadows. Something that has been watching humanity since the dawn of history.

The protagonist isn't who he thinks he is and continues to develop throughout the book. He is changed by the people who surround him. The action pulled the reader and the protagonist forward. The twists are philosophical and keep the reader guessing. I wonder what the next steps will be and who he will have to fight....

This is a cut above most kindle free SF, not only because, for one blessed moment, *there is nary a space marine in sight* . Not one! Such joy! (I am pig-sick of space marines. Come on, people, there's more to SF than bloody space navies) It's incredibly macho and hyper-violent still, which is fun. It's well-written, has some neat ideas - the especially odious fundie churches are a good twist. Most SF seems to imagine that no matter the other idiocies future humans get up to, they'll leave religion on earth, for some reason. Well worth a read. It also wraps up into a self-contained story with the promise of a sequel, rather than a cliffhanger. Like I said, a cut above. It reminds me a lot of Richard K Morgan's stuff. I'd have been happy to pay real money for this. Plz to write more of them Mr Dahlgren.
