Unveiling Beulah
Dana Wayne, author
The jagged scar on Bea Lockhart’s face never lets her forget she’s damaged goods, unsuited for marriage or society. Hidden in the shadows, she efficiently runs her father’s fashionable New York mercantile, and it becomes the place for the social elite to shop. But her soul cries out for more, making her easy prey for a handsome rogue who destroys her trust. Shattered, she flees to a small town in Texas. Lucian Moreau was raised by his wealthy, unsympathetic grandfather. An educated world traveler, he had everything a man could want. Except a family. When his grandfather proposes an arranged marriage between two powerful New York dynasties, Luc agrees, believing the union will provide what he lacks. Instead, betrayal forces him to see the charade his life has become. Angry and hurt, he leaves everything behind to start over in Texas. Haunted by deception and a lifetime of loneliness and rejection, these two lost souls find love at last. But when the past and present come together, will their love be strong enough to stop the collision from destroying their future?

Assessment:

Plot: Charming and evenly paced, the action and twists occur at the right places to keep the reader engaged in this tasteful romance. The author gives the main character a scar that affects her life in a negative way; while the author uses this device in the story, it feels forgotten about as the plot develops and the climax ensues. The reader anticipates that the scar will play a bigger role in the story; however, this does not deter from the entertainment the story provides.

Prose/Style: Well-written and easy to read, the author has created suspense at the end of each chapter, catapulting the reader forward. The language and dynamics are true to the time period in which the story is written.

Originality: Clearly well-researched, the characters and action stay true to the time period. The romance in the story feels simple and classy. Mixing romance with a bit of suspense is a fresh take,  as the reader gets to see the characters interact in ways other than anticipated.

Character Development/Execution: Taking place in 1879, when women’s roles were emerging and beginning to change, the characters here are true to the time period and grow throughout the story. While the main character has a facial scar, she does not let it deter her but seems to use it to help others as she is not nearly as perfect as another character believes herself to be. This contrast between the two characters creates an interpersonal tension that is satisfying to the reader.

Amazon Review

Beulah Mae Lockhart carries excruciating scars inside and out, made worse by her parents--the materialistic, wealthy mercantile owners of Lockhart's from New York who can't see beyond the façade of an individual. Especially when it's their embarrassing daughter wearing a noticeable facial scar from a childhood accident. They force her to stay veiled and completely miss Bea as a kindhearted, loving woman with a strong will to give back to her community. Bea intends to stop hiding and sets out for Texas to start her own mercantile business in a place where she's unknown for her family ties, and won't be shamed by the town because of her superficial scar.
She meets a handsome, hunky smithy named Lucian, and it's instant mutual attraction from the first day Bea enters his blacksmith shop. But Luc has a shaky past, one that follows him, dragging Bea into unraveling it if she wants this man for herself.

Seldom do I find a novel that draws me in and keeps me there until the end--all in one sitting. This author has that power, so be warned, Dana Wayne books will captivate you with the easy-to-read prose and sweet main characters portrayed with dignity and class. Her word choice in Unveiling Beulah is authentic for the Victorian era where formal speech and simple kindness was the norm. I find the author's books relaxing on a lazy day, and love how she makes food into a honest to goodness character, pulling it off beautifully! Recipes that capture the homecooked atmosphere of Texas line the end pages of Dana Wayne's books. She has another novel coming out soon, The Detail. I will be in line to read this one as well. Unveiling Beulah is an easy 5 Star read. BRAVO!

Beulah Lockhart goes by the name of Bea and is running from her family - and her past. After the death of her grandmother, she was able to purchase a mercantile in Texas. A scar on her face made her an embarrassment to her family and the subject of bullying among her peers, but she finally feels at home in this small town. There is another positive to this move, and that is Lucien Moreau. He is half French, half Native American, and is also running from his past. His grandfather wants him to take over his shipping business and marry a lovely, yet evil socialite. Bea and Lucien can’t resist their growing feelings for each other, but their pasts comes for them, threatening to split them up.

This charming historical is absolutely heartwarming! This is definitely a character-driven novel. Not only are the main characters amazing, but it is impossible to not love the supporting characters as well. In fact, readers will be dying for more books in the series because they will not want to let these characters go! Bea is beautiful inside and out, and it is very emotional to witness her discover that beauty for herself. Lucien is the definition of a book boyfriend. It is wonderful to see a romance that discusses that beauty is not only skin deep. The emphasis on kindness and friendship will bring out all the emotions. Plus, there is a delicious dash of suspense! This is the perfect book for romance lovers who want characters that can overcome anything!
