Tom Ward finds that his life is unraveling due to a medical condition brought about by his military service. He embarks on a journey to find his identity and place in the world, only to have a devastating encounter while hitchhiking that lands him in Vetlandia, a facility for the long-term treatment of military veterans. As he settles into life at the facility, he realizes that some patients get preferential treatment while others are singled out for degradation, abuse or having obstacles arbitrarily placed in their way. He learns too that complaining about staff can lead to premature discharge or possibly even death. Angered by the inhumane treatment that some vets receive, the lack of compassion and arrogant attitude of staff, Tom sets out to find out why, with each step bringing him closer to a reality of corruption and malpractice. Catalyzing a diverse group of disabled veterans into a resistance group, he identifies the malefactors and thwarts the objectives of a right-wing militia that has taken over the facility and threatens to blow it up.
