Retired teacher, Wade, sets out to walk the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. It is a pilgrimage of self-discovery, looking back at his life to date, planning for the time that is left and hoping to regain the belief in God he once had as a child. But is there a hidden secret in his past that he doesn't want to face up to? Along the way he meets many other pilgrims, including Angelina, a captivating young woman less than half his age. Wade is fascinated by Angelina, who reawakens his desire for a woman – a longing he has suppressed ever since his divorce. As he walks the Camino trail across northern Spain, Wade becomes sidetracked from his spiritual search and instead spends much of his time trying to find a woman – but is it true love, or just sex that he wants? A mysterious figure, the ancient Diego, warns Wade about this obsession, which is preventing him from making any progress with his spiritual search. Diego is his mentor, seeming to know the inner workings of Wade's mind - that he is concealing something, even from himself. But what is this dark secret? An almost forgotten figure from his past gradually emerges and has a name – Amy. But Wade still isn't ready to acknowledge this figure that has been hidden and secure in the deep recesses of his mind for so many years. As his pilgrimage ends, Wade is forced to realize that his obsession with finding a woman has prevented him from making any real progress towards his spiritual goal, and time is getting short. But in a way, his experiences on the Camino have prepared him to face the truth at last – that he has been Waiting for Amy all this time.
