Grieving a friend is hard. Grieving a friend during a pandemic is a lot harder. In What Our Friends Left Behind: Grief and Laughter in a Pandemic, you’ll meet a variety of people: first responders, last responders, Broadway performers, HIV/AIDS long-term survivors, artists, nuns, ministers, and a radio dj. All of them shared the struggle of how to keep in touch with friends while everyone was isolated. Unable to grieve those deaths as they normally would, they had to create new, meaningful ways to honor them. All while a worldwide pandemic forced us all to reconsider the very idea of friendship.
