When We Are Apart by Becca Johnsey is a children’s picture book about a young family and the feelings that can arise when one parent is away from the home for work. There is a sweet tenderness throughout the book that may result in a few heartstrings being pulled. The book has a rhyming scheme that makes the story even more poignant. The illustrations created by Marizan illicit a mood of tranquility and a sense of being at ease with the wash of pastel colors that greet each page. Marizan captures the emotions and feelings perfectly in her artwork and brings them to life in a way that juxtaposes brilliantly with Johnsey’s storyline. The two are a match made in storybook heaven, that is for sure.
