Whispers in the Windstorm: A Journal of God's Blessed Assurance During My Year With Breast Cancer
When Kathryn Danylko was diagnosed with breast cancer, God told her to journal through her illness—then write a book. The resulting work is about so much more than cancer and medical appointments. It’s about faith. It’s about relationships and how cancer changes them. About mission trips to Haiti to help at an orphanage. About the joy of picking cherries or watering a garden. And it’s about the scientifically inexplicable incidents that demonstrate the presence of God in Danylko’s life. The book is written as a series of journal entries that provide a glimpse into a beautiful soul as she goes through the medical, emotional, and spiritual roller coaster called cancer. Whether she’s revealing her inner struggles or describing the small blessings in her daily life, you’ll feel that she’s talking to you soul to soul over a cup of coffee. In this inspirational journey of faith, Kathryn shares the Bible verses that give her hope and strength. And she describes how God reaches out to her in remarkable, improbable, and miraculous ways, and how, in the end, He heals her.
Reviews
In her first book, a collection of personal journal entries, Danylko chronicles her cancer journey. Beginning a few short weeks after she was diagnosed with breast cancer and concluding with her decision to refuse more chemotherapy, Danylko provides intimate insight into the ways cancer has affected her life, faith, and loved ones. She vividly recalls the physical pain of a mastectomy and chemotherapy, as well as the emotional turmoil of losing a breast and making myriad difficult decisions, such as whether the benefit of treatment outweighs the side effects. True to her lived reality, the book is not solely about her medical journey, but provides glimpses into her family life, marriage, career, mission work, and (most importantly for Danylko) faith. Much of the book, in fact, is dedicated to describing her mission trips to Haiti and her ruminations on a Christian obligation to share wealth with the poor. Though some readers may not agree with all of Danylko’s viewpoints or decisions, this book provides a moving and often heart-wrenching glimpse into what it’s like to experience cancer. (BookLife)
