Reviews
This rousing entry in Pillay’s Inspirational Careers for Kids series (which includes titles like When I’m a Surgeon and When I’m an Entrepreneur) sets its sights on the biggest job of all as readers are introduced to a young girl whose ambition is to become the President of the United States. As she envisions a future of signing bills at the Resolute Desk, taking the time to listen to constituents, and giving uplifting speeches at graduations, her resounding message is one of love, hope, and growth for the people and the nation as a whole, this likable aspirant goes against the grain of contemporary cynicism to present politics as a career for impassioned change-makers, dreaming of making "the world a better place.”

Pillay introduces young readers to such leadership as a calling with a story that nurtures idealism, a dedication to hard work, and the conviction that any dream is possible, such as a woman becoming President and achieving a positive global impact. Bold and vibrant illustrations by Remesh Ram bring this dreamer’s vision to life with characters and scenes that pop off the page, such as the narrator’s future self standing at the Lincoln Memorial, vowing always to be honest. Pillay highlights setting goals, dreaming big, and planning for the future, all while demonstrating the power of affirmative statements and visualizing achievement.

While the focus of this series is on dreaming big about individual career goals, the message throughout these pages is expansive, as here the narrator’s dream is to build community and be the change she wants to see in the world. Celebrating the diversity in America, this book powerfully links politics to people and the way America and its leaders affect the world. Young readers will be captivated by the images, smartly simple prose that has the cadences of a powerful speech, and the promise of a young girl in a position of power.

Takeaway: Empowering picture book of dreaming big, politics, and making positive change.

"Its never to late for dreams. Children like to dream about what they want to be when they growup. They always say they want to be a doctor or president of the US, fireman, policeman and the list goes on and on. Its great for kids to have.dreams. this book just talks about that beautifully! Its a great read and I have a good feeling the children will love this book. Read rebook to the kids and see what kind of discussion will happen. Kids love that. Its a great way to get your child to discuss such topics."

"'When I'm the President' is a precious and impactful gift to girls that reinforces presidential aspirations and articulates the fundamental values we seek in our leaders, like attentive listening, accountability, honesty, fairness, and a commitment to safeguarding citizens' freedoms. In just fifteen affirmations, this essential read succinctly communicates the virtues of a strong leader that children can envision in themselves."

This book has a great way for showing girls that they can be anything! Full of optimism, I will definitely be reading this book to my daughter. After I read the book, I sent the title of the entire series to our Children's Librarian so she can order them for the collection. A must read!

I was curious about this book and how they would approach the subject of becoming president. This little girl dreams of becoming President one day and when she does she list the things that she will do when that day comes. She will listen carefully to people. Answer questions. Be honest. Make rules that are fair. Uphold our freedoms. Create opportunities. Solve difficult problems. Lead in a crisis. Give your courage. Keep people safe. Look after our country. Build world peace. Protect the planet. Make the world a better place. Bring you hope. All these things are great goals for a president to have. The illustrations were very pretty and added to the story.

Beth H. - NetGalley

"This is an idealist book about what a president should do. The illustrations are eye catching and the sentiments are very positive. The book would be a sold conversation starter for preschool-aged students. It will be a good addition to both preschool and home libraries."

This was a sweet read for children. It felt very age appropriate and helpful for children navigating the presidential election, as well as to inspire children to think about working in politics. I loved the pictures and the words. This is an excellent children’s book!

Christine M - NetGalley

I love the energy from this story! I can read it to my kids and feel the empowerment radiating in them and on each page. I am so glad it has a companion activity book to help foster the idea of reaching for your dreams as president. This is perfect for the 2024 election cycle even though female representation is lacking in the candidates on both isles, it does not have to lack in the hearts and imaginations of children around the country! Beautiful story and looking forward to reading more from her book series.

This simple aspirational book for little girls has beautiful pictures and a lovely message. A good simple message for younger readers.

Ellwyn Autumn, Pre-School Teacher, professional reviewer

This book is a first person narrative of one young woman possessing the desired traits citizens look for in effective leaders. These types of leaders bring about progressive change for everyone regardless of their background.

When I’m the President is the latest installment in The Inspirational Careers for Kids book series. It packs a powerful diplomatic punch that many of today’s leaders should take to heart.

In 2020 the United States of America finally voted its first female vice president into office. It was a historical moment for little girls everywhere. It was a momentous day for the little girls who grew up dreaming of seeing a woman in high office. I was one of them.

Sadly, since that day, more attacks on women’s rights have taken place leaving our spirits and bodies vulnerable.

Instead of recognizing the crucial role women play in society, we are witnessing ongoing assaults on women and girls’ rights.

The book refocuses the lens on how crucial respected women are to a healthy society. It provides a spotlight on how little girls can still achieve great things.

One might say this is a call to action for leaders of the world to step up and do the right thing for everyone no matter their race, religion, gender, or cultural background.

The book is intended for young children but citizens of all ages would benefit from reading and reflecting on the aspirational traits the president in this story possesses. Traits like honesty, courage, active listening, and problem-solving that parents and educators strive to instill in children.

The female characters break down gender norms through the clothes they wear and the professions where they work. The main character is a female President of the United States. There are female Secret Service Agents and male and female advisors to the president.

The president motivates a diverse population from different cultures to strive for greatness as a united front. She is a role model for youngsters, an example for aspiring politicians to remember they have a duty to public service that includes the environment and everything in it.

The text of the story is affirmational but concise. Ramesh Ram’s bright illustrations bolsters the text with images of confident women in powerful roles. My favorite illustration is the map of the United States that has an array of diverse people from all corners of the world.

This is a wonderful introduction for children regarding what the responsibilities of a President should be towards his or her constituents and fellow citizens. The most important aspects of leadership are held up to indicate what the qualities of a good president might be. …., this is an important little book for children to read. The icing on the cake is the diversity element which is handled well, with really nice accompanying illustrations. Highly recommended.

"This book presents an ideal of what political leaders ought to be in the sense that leading honestly from the front is the way to do it. Very well done!
"Only 26.5% of parliamentarians are women worldwide."
"Believe you can, and you're halfway there." Theodore Roosevelt as quoted in this book
The illustrations by Remesh Ram are clear, imaginative, colorful, and informative.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your local public library!."

It was clear but simple. Can you imagine if we had a president who really thought, planned, and acted like that?! A great children’s book with a promise of hope

I really enjoyed this book. I loved how it teaches young girls that they can grow up to become anything -- even a president. I thought the story was easy to follow and I also enjoyed the illustrations. I Highly recommend this book for librarians, parents, and teachers to purchase for their collection.

What an absolutely perfect children's book! I requested this advanced reader's copy to see if it might be something I could share with my niece and nephew... And I certainly will be doing just that! This book's theme is centered on empowerment, breaking barriers, and allowing little girls and children to envision themselves in a big, world-changing position, like the President of the United States. Not only does the book open a child's eyes to see herself in this role, but it helps to teach children the traits of a good leader -- like hope, fairness, equal representation,

honesty, solving problems, listening, and having good communication. The book's style is simple, so it's an easy read at bedtime for young children. Its sentences also leave plenty of room for discussions, to share more personal stories between parents and children. The illustrations are beautifully done and are fun to look at too. I would highly recommend this book to ANYONE with young children who are curious, who have big dreams, or who need a reminder that the sky is the limit when it comes to their dreams for their futures

I loved this book. As a boy mom its my responsibility to raise my son right and I think this book portrays the changes in society and that women can do anything. I would love to purchase this for my son and read it to him soon!

This is the first I've seen of this series but it's definitely one I'm going to look into ordering for my library. A lot of kids books are written as informational, it's about the specific job that the book covers. With this book, it seemed inspirational, not only could it inspire kids to really think about themselves in this role, but it also could lead them to take personal ownership over the ideas that are discussed in the book and do what they can to enact them. I absolutely loved the full color illustrations. With such simple text you could use it as a read-aloud with younger kids, with older kids it could be used as a jumping off point for discussion and/or essay writing.

My favorite of the four book series of which I've read two. I absolutely loved that everything being taught can be done whether you are President or not. The story can easily be read aloud. The illustrations are lovely. They warrant a look by themselves. I read the book, then flipped happily through enjoying each picture. The color palette is warm and inviting. I would gift this to a teacher, young person, nursery, and or a Sunday School class.

Girl power is evident throughout the pages of Dr. Samantha Pillay's book When I'm the President: Dreaming is Believing. Each spread identifies an important aspect of being the president. The values necessary for a leader to have -- honesty, listening, problem-solving, and promoting world peace -- are highlighted. The president is a woman who is surrounded by other women in prominent roles. Children are often told that they can be anything they want to be, but seldom do they see actual role models depicted in picture books. Young children are visual learners so seeing women as the predominant characters with influential careers is empowering

Dr. Samantha Pillay states that one of her goals is to create books that break career gender stereotypes. When I'm the President fulfills that goal admirably. Not only is the president a woman but her advisors are also pictured as female. The illustrations by Remesh Ram are eye-catching and vivid. They showcase a diverse cast of people and also many iconic American monuments. I enjoyed seeing the portrait of Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the Oval Office! Kids soak up so much information through all sorts of media, so filling their world with examples of strong female leadership is vital. In addition to being empowering for girls, the character traits that make for an inspiring and worthwhile leader are illustrated in ways that kids can understand. They will be encouraged to emulate the characteristics that make a great leader, no matter where their path takes them. When I'm the President is a must for every school and public library shelf.

Amazing!!!! The story is simple enough to captivate kids this age but conveys such an important message - and the illustrations are top-tier. The way the phrases are structured ('When I'm the President...") really help the child with visualising what it's like to be a great leader. Very important in today's world.
