Troublemakers
Gregg Maxwell Parker. Parker, $9.99 paper (120p) ISBN 978-1-69088-171-1
This high-energy tripartite narrative follows the misadventures of sixth graders Carlos, a fast-talking Latinx “entrepreneur”; Tina, the group’s muscle and sole black girl; and Lord Byron Huang, an unconventional Chinese boy, as they engage in money-making schemes and try to avoid detention at South Central Los Angeles’s Carver Middle School. “The Good Track,” “Armando’s Trampoline,” and “The Old Chips,” narrated by Carlos, Tina, and Byron, respectively, recall situations the trio finds themselves in—and the oft-unintended consequences they induce. Leading with a series of their infamous, semisuccessful schemes, Carlos eventually describes their attempts to game the school’s block scheduling system using an intricate infiltration and cheating plan. Tina follows with the group’s efforts to get invited to elitist Armando’s house in order to bounce on his trampoline. Finally, Byron relays a tale of potential time travel in which his “sneezes are the method of travel” through a space-time continuum controlled by a specific brand of expired chips. Despite the protagonists’ virtually indistinguishable voices, Parker keeps readers engaged with snarky footnotes, comedic asides, and accessible dialogue. Ages 12–up. (Self-published)
