Havana Hangover

Adult; Mystery/Thriller; (Market)

Thirty-year-old Chicago corporate lawyer Tanner Ford leaves behind a painful past and lucrative job for a bucket-list trip to Cuba with Jackson Swift, his estranged best friend from law school. But when they arrive, the oddities start adding up. Jackson evades questions about his wife and kids. Their itinerary keeps changing, and their tour guide might work for a fake company. When Tanner awakes after a rum-soaked night beside Dannel, a local musician with something to hide, and a text from Jackson that reads “HELP ME,” his dream vacation turns into a fight for survival. He is held hostage in an abandoned cigar factory, interrogated by the police, and hunted down by a mysterious “ghost” in the Cuban government. Beset by anxiety and panic attacks, Tanner is hurled unwittingly into an international conspiracy leading right back to Jackson and a friendship that began in betrayal. Havana Hangover is a story about healing, friendship, love and deceit, set within a lovingly-rendered Cuban cityscape and fueled by rapid twists and turns, eventually landing in the corrupt corners of DC politics.
Reviews
Tanner Ford, a lawyer in midlife crisis, is launched into a nightmare of murder and espionage in this fast-paced actioner by Richardson (author of Lost in the Ivy). When Tanner reconnects with his old law school friend Jackson for a bucket-list trip to Cuba, he’s guarded, to say the least; after all, Jackson pretty much stole Tanner’s ex-girlfriend, Anabel, out from under him—and married her. His fears seem to be warranted, as Jackson disappears during the trip, forcing Tanner to deal with Anabel and sparking questions about Jackson’s past. Soon, Tanner’s entangled with not just his friends’ troubles, but also the governments of two clashing countries.

Richardson excels at keeping the action going. Tanner runs from one crisis to another, all of them handsomely choreographed, and there's plenty of romantic passion in between when Tanner connects with Dannel, a sultry woman he meets at a bar, who’s keeping her own secrets. The Cuban setting delivers extra flair, and Richardson’s sharp depictions of the bars, the poverty, and the country’s lively charm are riveting. Most striking is the balance Richardson achieves between the Cubans’ interactions with each other and their dealings with the tourists they rely on as a source of income. Occasionally, the narrative gets needlessly complicated, with a political side plot that seems underdeveloped, but Richardson keeps the story on a fast track until the very last page.

Though most of the book is focused on action, Tanner's self-aware narration provides a welcome counterbalance, and even though character loyalties change with dizzying speed, the long-term history linking Tanner, Anabel, and Jackson remains powerful. Richardson binds the set pieces with a consistent theme: Tanner trying to come to terms with his past relationships, especially with Anabel and Jackson, and his attempt to create a new life with Dannel. The ending is bittersweet, as readers see Tanner's growth and a hint of further adventures.

Takeaway: Attorney in midlife crisis faces a violent conspiracy in Cuba in this charged thriller.

An American tourist in Cuba gets swept up in a violent criminal underworld in the stirring latest from Richardson (Lost in the Ivy). Tanner Ford and Jackson Swift were inseparable at Georgetown Law School, but grew apart after Jackson married Tanner’s former girlfriend. Tanner attended the couple’s 2011 wedding, but he hasn’t been in touch with Jackson for five years when he receives an invitation to join his former classmate on a trip to Havana after President Obama lifts the embargo on U.S. travel to Cuba. Tanner, a Hemingway admirer, has long dreamt of visiting the writer’s favorite city, and when Jackson offers an itinerary that includes a visit to Hemingway’s home, Tanner forgoes old resentments and agrees to the trip. The dream excursion turns grisly when Jackson disappears after sending a series of alarming late-night texts that concludes with “HELP ME!” The next day, Tanner is told by their tour guide that Jackson has been found dead on the street with his wallet and shoes missing. But all is not as it seems: soon, Tanner himself is abducted and pulled into a bloody conflict that Jackson may have been setting him up for all along. Richardson keeps the surprises coming at a steady clip as he pulls readers into Tanner’s nerve-wracking plight. This is one nightmare vacation worth taking. (Self-published)
