Helena Kanderka is the grandaughter of four Slovak immigrants. Her novel, Slovakland, covers the life of a Slovak family from the 7th Century until the Great Migration. She holds a degree in journalism from the Univeristy of Wisconsin-Madison and a master's degree in Public Administration from California State University-Sacramento. She has given presentations on the history of Slovakia and Eastern Europe in an attempt to counteract the dearth of education on Eastern Europe in US schools.
