Slovakland

Adult; General Fiction (including literary and historical); (Market)

When it comes to the epic history of Central Europe, the Slovaks were involved in it all, yet little is known of their story. Even Slovak immigrants never talked about the "old country". The captivating history of a Slovak family is finally told here. It begins with a cunning jewel heist and escape from the Hunnic Avars in 791. The characters then survive through the centuries as they become part of Great Moravia, Magyar-controlled Hungary, and finally the mighty Austro-Hungarian Empire. The years connect them to Charlemagne, Crusaders and the Mongols. They survive plagues, famines, bloody battles, fires and cruel lords. We see them forced to work, fight, and change their religion. Yes, they eventually rebel. Despite the rape, plunder and gore, there are many light moments--the crazy priest, magnificent knights, the wonder of building a castle. The characters learn to live by their wits and determination. They conduct 'pop up' markets for Crusaders. They fool the Hussites by pretending to be Jewish. And here the beautiful and mighty Slovak castles are settings for their own intriguing events, not stand-ins for Game of Thrones or Braveheart. These strong people lived for centuries as virtual slaves in a multi-ethnic nation that was controlled by the aristocracy and the Catholic Church. They endured pandemics and climate change before science could explain what was happening. Yet they survived--and many went on to successful lives in America.

5*This is a very well written and interesting book that covers the history of a Slovak family from the end of the 7th Century until it immigrates to America in 1904. The family is impacted by the Avars, the Great Moravian Empire, the Magyars and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The author obviously did extensive research on Eastern European history as it evolved over the centuries.

It was fascinating how the author transports the reader to the times when actual historical events occurred. The author also explains the significant role that Christianity and other religions played in the development of Eastern Europe. The transportation and explanations were enhanced by the intriguing dialogue between the characters.

5*an excellent history of Slovakia and all its iterations from 800 AD to 1900 -follows generations of one family and covers all the history, invasions, crusades, religious battles, and politics. Well researched with families and a village to make it all imaginable!

5*A very interesting and thorough history of Slovakia and the Slovakian people.
