A Campfire Story by Cindy and Gus Gee is the tenth book in the Boar and Family Books series. It is a children’s mystery book centered around a highly-anticipated camping trip. Adding to the anticipation is Boar's dad's announcement that he will tell everyone a really scary story around the campfire. The children get together and excitedly make plans for the weekend while sharing their concerns and asking for help with various things like toasting marshmallows. The atmosphere is positive and expectant. Finally, they arrive at the forest and set up their tents. Before long, it's time for the much-anticipated campfire story. Boar’s dad gathers everyone around and does a beautiful job of stoking the excitement and holding their attention.
A Campfire Story by Cindy and Gus Gee is a sweet and simple nostalgia-inducing story about fun memories created around campfires. It is nice to observe how Boar’s dad builds suspense and keeps the children engaged from the beginning to the end of the story by using the right words and pausing at the right times. Those who enjoy telling stories can take a cue from Boar’s dad. I found myself also anticipating the end of his story to discover the source of the strange knocks. It certainly didn’t end how I was expecting. There are many characters introduced at the same time at the beginning of the book. This will require children to pay extra attention so they can follow along. Those already familiar with the Boar and Family Books series characters will read this story easily.
