Former Local Resident Author Wins Multiple Book Awards.

Author, Sheri-Lynn Kenny, grew up in the small rural community of White River, Ont., north of Lake Superior. A former naval officer, Kenny spent eight years at sea on frigates and destroyers before transferring to be an education and training specialist.
After leaving the military, she enrolled at Lakehead University in 2009 to complete her bachelor of education and is now a substitute teacher with Chignecto-Central Regional School Board. Kenny took a break from teaching in 2013-15 to concentrate on her writing.
The aim her books was to focus on specific areas for education: human impact on the environment, diversity in the community, ABC’s, fire safety, counting, adding, and making friends.
The first book is entitled: The Battle at Bogs Hollow. This story is about a small pond in the middle of the forest. One day horrible mechanical monsters arrive bent on destruction. All the animals depart, while three friends remain behind to battle the monsters and try to save their home.
The book focuses on environmental systems and interactions as well as sustainability and stewardship.
The second book is entitled The Kitchen of Many Colours. This book is about a little girl, Lara, who moves from Newfoundland to a small remote community in northern Ontario.
The book focuses on fire safety in the home. It also focuses on how people are connected to a family and a community; the similarities and differences between different groups of people; the role of change in people’s lives and how it affects the family and communities; and multiculturalism.
Kenny decided to expand her creativity by writing and illustrating her next three books. The aim of the books: The Alphabet According to Dewey; Counting Kittens, and The Adventures of Digbee: Have You Seen My Touque? are to offer some education amidst the fun and entertainment of reading.
The Alphabet According to Dewey is a whimsical tale about a tabby cat named Dewey. Kenny decided to use photography of the cat to enhance the text and interact with the reader. Dewey is always up to mischief, he simply refers to it as exploration and learning. The book focuses on different words for each letter in the alphabet. If you know a cat or animal lover, this book will incite laughter.
Kenny’s next book Counting Kittens, is a tale of ten kittens who live along the shores of the Bay of Fundy. One morning they decide to go camping along the shore. They have all sorts of adventures while camping. The group is always dived into two groups for all of the activities and the reader can count and add along with the kittens. In this new book Kenny used her original artwork which is vibrant and engages the reader.
The final book is The Adventures of Digbee: Have You Seen My Touque? This story is inspired by living on the Bay of Fundy and a short distance from Parrsboro, NS. Digbee is a coelophysis (see-low-fie-sis) dinosaur and his bones were found on the beaches close to Parrsboro, NS. In this wonderful story, Digbee loses his colourful touque. He spends the entire day searching for it. Along the way he meets all sorts of Canadian animals and learns all about colours. Kenny also illustrated this book as well.
All five books were recently selected as Mom’s Choice silver award recipients as well as Canada Book Award winners. The books have also been entered in the New Book Awards. With these books Kenny wanted to share some experiences that she has had, but also create teaching tools that were entertaining for children. She also wanted to give the books a purpose – the ability to support curriculum outcomes for Primary to Grade five.

Sheri-Lynn Kenny of Parrsboro has written five children’s books and is working on two more.

Parrsboro resident Sheri-Lynn Kenny has so far written five children’s books, all of which received critical acclaim, and she has shown no signs of slowing down.

“I always loved to story tell,” she said. “Then I had friends ask me, ‘Why don’t I write them down and do something with them’?

It was while attending teachers’ college in 2009-2010 that the seed was planted for her first book, Battle at Boggs Hollow. It started as a class project for Grade Six students, so they could read create a storybook and read to Grade Three students to teach them about biodiversity.

That led to The Kitchen of Many Colours, a biographical story of sorts set in her hometown of White Rock, Ont., about a kitchen damaged by fire that gets finished with help from multicultural neighbours. That story is based on her real-life family experience, in which her younger sister accidentally started a fire in their family home.

In the past year, she has published three more children’s books: The Alphabet According to Dewey, The Adventures of Digbee: have You Seen My Toque?, and Counting Kittens.

All five books, which are aimed at children from ages two to nine, are Canada Book Award and Mom’s Choice Silver Award winners.

Kenny has been thrilled with the response.

“At first, it was just sort of like I had these two stories, and let’s see what I can do with them,” she said. “Now, every time I sit down, I star writing ideas down instead of just ignoring them.”

That active imagination continues to work overtime, as she is now at work on two more books. One will feature dinosaurs in Parrsboro, while another is based on experiences she had with her niece and nephew this past summer.
