In this 8th mystery novel in the Alice MacDonald Greer Mystery series, Alice flies to the Aberdeen Mortuary in Scotland with her college-aged kids John and Ann to learn if newly-found wreckage from a helicopter that left an oil rig five years ago contains the remains of the kids’ father, and Alice’s husband, Jordie Greer.
The three visit Jordie’s mother Gran at her Scottish farm. They discover cryptic language in Jordie’s notebook suggesting his favorite cousin, seabed geologist Jimmie Greer, was also on the rig. But Jimmie’s been out of touch for years after taking a job searching for Pacific seabed minerals.
Back at her law office in Coffee Creek, Texas, Alice meets with Nanette and Mischa, two young women lawyers. Nanette fears the private equity deal she’s been dragged into may involve dirty money. Alice agrees to help her find a new job.
When Nanette is found dead in her apartment parking lot, her parents hire Alice to help them as Nanette’s executors. Alice and her assistant Silla inventory Nanette’s apartment. They find a carefully hidden document suggesting Nanette’s bosses ordered her to take illegal shortcuts.
Meanwhile, a British Consulate officer arrives at Alice’s office to question her about Jimmie Greer. Alice’s frustration mounts as her calls to son John, in Hong Kong, go unanswered. To her surprise her children arrive the next day at Austin airport—with Jimmie. Jimmie has been held prisoner, analyzing rare earth metals. He copied the ship’s computer records, escaped, and now fears his captors are on his trail.
Meanwhile Alice gets a desperate call from M.A., a tough old ranch woman, at her friend Lacey’s ranch. Two men threaten to cut M.A.’s throat if Lacey won’t sell her ranch. Alice and her love interest Ben Kinsear race to the rescue. Jimmie survives attack at the Coffee Creek Beer Barn Holiday Bazaar. After a celebratory Thanksgiving dinner at Kinsear’s ranch, puzzle pieces fall into place, linking illegal seabed mining to money laundering in the Texas Hill Country, and Nanette’s murderer is revealed.
