Shaketown: The Madam's Daughter
Based on a true story: When 18-year-old Irish Cayley teams up with a Chinese scholar to help a stranger, neither of them realizes their lives are about to change in unimaginable ways. San Francisco's gilt-and-grime 1890s set the stage for Cayley's transformation from a timid house-servant to unapologetic queen of the city's underworld. Wo Sam, wishing only to earn enough money to return to China, becomes a soldier in Chinatown's tong wars. Unable to return to his Chinese life after murdering a tong ally, Sam joins Cayley in running the most luxurious "sporting house" in San Francisco, catering to the city's influential and wealthy. Flamboyant, clever characters, richly colored settings and plot twists make Shaketown a page-turner with heart. Caught between worlds--Chinese and Caucasian, respectable and sordid, poor and rich--Cayley and Sam must survive in a rigid and racist Victorian society that accepts neither of them. And where is love in all this? Cayley, Sam and the citizens of Shaketown are determined to find it--faithless husbands, ruthless murderers and earthquakes be damned!

Shaketown is a page-turner!By Zwoman on June 8, 2015 Format: Kindle Edition

Shaketown is a page-turner! It's an extraordinary tale of the underworld of historic San Francisco years before and after the 1906 earthquake. The author recreates and captures the setting and mood of that era. In fact, I felt like I was one of the colorful characters living inside the story. I was amazed that Cayley was based on a true person. This is a must read! I couldn't put it down and didn't want it to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars  Fascinating read

Shaketown held me captivated. The characters are visual and compelling, just the way I like them. I found the book to be a worthwhile escape from the daily grind. And I felt like I was transported back in time, to a San Francisco that hardly resembles the one I've come to know and love.

5.0 out of 5 starsShaketown by Joanne MillerBy Nick Slater on April 4, 2015

Shaketown is a real page-turner! The author has obviously done her research on San Francisco at the turn of the 20th century and her main character is based on a real person who lived in the city at that time. The description of the 1906 earthquake is absolutely gripping and the whole story is very cinematic (Spielberg, are you listening?).The main characters really come alive and she has done such a great job transporting the reader back in time you can almost smell the horse droppings and the spicy aromas of Chinatown at that time.
