Tides of Change, Book One of The Atlantis Chronicles

Adult; Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror; (Market)

“Tides of Change,” Book One of "The Atlantis Chronicles” trilogy, begins far beneath the wild beauty of the Aegean Sea. Having survived one horrific cataclysm, a society as ancient as time, now thrives untouched and undiscovered in blue waters once ruled by Poseidon Unknown to any but their Healer, a devastating secret threatens Atlantis with yet another extinction event. The matriarchal healing line, descended from Poseidon, no longer has an heir. In a desperate bid to ensure the continuance of their small, underwater community, Na-Kai eva Evenor, Most Sovereign Healer of Atlantis, unleashes a power the Healers have been expressly forbidden to use from the beginning of time. Rising from the hidden depths of Atlantis, Na-Kai’s telekinetic web of energy shimmers to a halt atop the jagged, volcanic cliffs of the exotic Greek island of Santorini. Compelled from her hotel room to the very edge of the dark, windswept cliffs, Daria Caiden is trapped in the grasp of Na-Kai's relentless thought-form. Forced to dive from the precipice, Daria is pulled deep into the sapphire waters below. Floating in midnight quiet, she releases her last breath, and waits to die. In one shattering moment, events are set into motion that will bring about catastrophic change. Changes that no one could foresee.

Assessment:

Plot: MacIver's fast-paced novel adeptly introduces readers to the fascinating world of Atlantis and its people, the villain who could be their downfall, and the mysteries and magic responsible for transforming Daria's life.

Prose: MacIver's prose is clear, elegant, and provides readers with sentences as lovely as the poetry and songs of the Atlanteans. That said, there are few mechanical and grammatical errors to be found.

Originality: From the main storyline to additional creative elements that enhance the text, MacIver provides readers with a meticulously-constructed Atlantean civilization and culture that they will find intriguing.

Character Development: MacIver seamlessly builds characters whose emotions are as colorful, unpredictable and malleable as the world that surrounds them. Even non-Terran and non-Atlantean species are given special attention and care.

Blurb: Susan MacIver's aquatic adventures drag readers to oceanic depths of despair, to the promise of sunlight glimmering on the waves, and back again.

Alien surroundings with believable people and just enough explanation to not get in the reader’s way. Women who are both strong and have a bit of the romantic-plot frailty… You have written an excellent book…I enjoyed this hugely…Good job! I would recommend this book to all my friends.

I very seldom read novels like Tides of Change, but at the urging of a friend I decided to try it. Am I ever glad I did! Susan's exhaustive research, character building, and story telling prowess had me hooked from page one. Her expertly entwined mixture of lore, fantasy, romance, intrigue, human frailty and hope kept me turning pages until my eyes were too tired to continue. What a great read and I can't wait until the next one is published!!
